Acupuncture is an holistic system of medicine which has been practised in China and the East for thousands of years. It works gently with the body’s own natural energies and has proven to be both safe and effective in the treatment of a wide range of medical conditions. In addition, acupuncture is deeply relaxing and many people report a sense of general wellbeing as well as an improvement of symptoms. It is safe to use alongside conventional medicine, during pregnancy and even for babies and children.

Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese system of healing which has been used for thousands of years to successfully treat many common conditions. Modern science has shown that acupuncture can stimulate release of chemicals which stimulate the body’s natural defences. Extremely fine needles are inserted into specific points to increase the flow of Qi (vital energy) and enhance the immune system.

Acupuncture works on three levels:
1. Helps release the body’s own natural painkillers and anti-inflammatory abilities
2. Increases blood flow and so helps to eliminate toxins
3. Helps to regenerate the body and fight illnesses
Acupuncture can successfully treat Stress and Anxiety, Back Pain, Arthritis, Headaches, Tinnitus, Sciatica, Painful and Irregular Periods, Nausea and Morning Sickness, Infertility, Panic Attacks, Diarrhoea, Night Sweats.

Acupuncture assists in treating not only immediate symptoms, but also underlying constitutional imbalances by improving overall health and immune system. Many people say they feel greater energy and focus following a course of Acupuncture. Acupuncture is as effective in treating either acute or chronic conditions and avoids side effects. Early treatment of minor symptoms can help prevent more serious health problems worsening or even developing.

Can I get cross infection from acupuncture?
A: The acupuncture needles are always sterilised before use. To eliminate any possibility of getting AIDS, or other infectious diseases, only disposable needles are used (and used once only then disposed of safely)at Fu’s Natural Healing Centre to ensure that the strictest standards of sterilisation are maintained (approved by the Department of Health) to protect against HIV, Hepatitis B or any other virus.

What about the needles used?
A: We only use single use pre-sterilised disposable needles, which are disposed of after each treatment. As members of The Association of Traditional Chinese Medicine (UK) and The Federation of Traditional Chinese Medicine, we observe the Code of Practice closely, which lays down stringent standards of hygiene and sterilisation of equipment.

Does acupuncture really work?

Acupuncture has been tried and tested over many thousands of years and is very effective in the majority of people. As with any treatment, people respond differently, and some may experience a better result, more quickly than others. However, most people will benefit from having acupuncture, and current research, especially into topics such as pain and fertility is extremely positive.

Modern science demonstrates:
● Acupuncture alters body chemicals, including stimulation of endorphins.
● Acupuncture sensation effect nerves and cause beneficial reflex response.
● Acupuncture affects the bodies natural electro-magnetic fields.
● Acupuncture harmonizes the balance of whole body, Yin/Yang; Qi/Blood; Zang/Fu

The 1997 National Institute of Health Consensus Conference on Acupuncture stated:
“The data in support of acupuncture are as strong as those for many accepted Western medical therapies.“

“One of the advantages of acupuncture is that the incidence of adverse effects is substantially lower than that of many drugs or other accepted medical procedures used for the same conditions.”

How long does a treatment take?

Allow over an hour for your first treatment, as your acupuncturist will need to take a full medical history and ask you a number of other questions. This is also an opportunity for you to explain exactly what you hope to gain from your acupuncture treatment. After this initial consultation, treatments normally last around 45 minutes.

What does it feel like?

People often describe a pleasant tingling sensation or a dull ache. The needles used in acupuncture are many times finer than an injection needle, so any discomfort is minimal.

Is it safe? Are there any side-effects?

Acupuncture has a very good safety record. It is suitable for all ages, and safe to use during pregnancy. As it works gently with the body’s natural systems, side effects are rarely experienced. Some people may feel tired after a treatment, other possible side effects are temporary light-headedness, or dizziness, feeling emotional or minor bruising. Any side effects should be reported to your acupuncturist.

Does acupuncture hurt?
A: Not usually. A dull ache often develops at the point (considered to be a good therapeutic sign) but the needles are so fine that people having treatment for the first time are pleasantly surprised, finding the treatment to be very relaxing and therapeutic.

How will I feel after acupuncture?
A: Usually relaxed and calm. Occasionally you may feel tired or drowsy for a few hours if the treatment has been particularly strong or there may be a short term flaring up of your symptoms as your Qi clears and resettles itself.

Can I get better straight away if I have a session of acupuncture for my lower back pain/frozen shoulder/headache/sciatica?
A: Yes, in most cases, you can feel the difference straight away after one session of treatment.

Is acupuncture safe?
A: Acupuncture is only safe and efficacy when it is operated in a proper trained practitioner’s hand. A practitioner must be registered with a professional organization, such as the Association of Traditional Chinese Medicine (ATCM). ATCM’s members must observe the Code of Practice which defines the hygiene and safety standards relating to the practice of acupuncture. Code of Practice is available for download from the website www.atcm.co.uk/about us .
